Patients considering improvement of the eyelid area may opt for blepharoplasty. This involves removing the skin and, at times, conservative amounts of fat tissue from the upper and lower eyelid areas. It is important to attempt the minimal removal of tissues and support of tissues to obtain natural appearing results with significant improvement. The majority of patients however undergo this procedure to improve the excess tissues and puffiness in the eyelids.
This procedure is performed in the office operating suite under local anesthetic (injections of numbing medication) and intravenous sedation. The procedure takes from one to two hours and patients return home the same day. The stitches are left in place from three to five days. There may be bruising and swelling which slowly dissipates over one to two weeks.
This is one of the more popular facial procedures since nice improvements can be obtained with minimal time for recovery compared to other procedures. It is important to consider other aspects of the facial tissues when considering eyelid surgery including the position of the brow and the position of the mid-face tissues. These areas do affect the appearance in the eyelids. Scarring is quite minimal due to the fact that eyelids heal with very fine and light scars.
